Maheen Hyder
Maheen’s Clinical Supervision Philosophy
Supervision can be a place where you learn to think more deeply about your work, make sense of what is happening in the room, and become increasingly confident in your own clinical judgment.
I’m Maheen Hyder, MSW, RSW, a registered social worker, trauma therapist and clinical supervisor with more than ten years of experience across clinical, humanitarian, research and community health settings in Canada, Egypt, Pakistan and Afghanistan. I provide individual, dyadic and group supervision for RP(Q)s and early-career therapists. I meet the clinical supervision requirements for both the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, and can complete CRPO attestation forms as required.
My areas of particular strength include complex trauma and PTSD, refugee and newcomer mental health, cross-cultural and interpreter-mediated therapy, forced migration, torture rehabilitation, sexual and gender-based violence, suicide risk, grief, displacement, and the psychological impacts of war and political violence.
My supervision is warm, direct, collaborative and anti-colonial. I understand therapy as political.
Psychological suffering does not emerge separately from the conditions in which people live. Racism, migration and borders, colonialism, gender, sexuality, poverty, displacement and violence can all shape what enters the therapy room. Together, we can attend closely to a client’s inner world without losing sight of the social, cultural and political realities surrounding it.
We can also remain curious about the theories we inherit: what they help us understand, what they obscure, whose knowledge they privilege, and when a client’s lived experience asks us to think beyond them.
There is room in supervision for all of it: your questions, doubts, anxieties, excitement and uncertainty. I want to hear about the sessions that leave you second-guessing yourself, but I also want to hear about the moments when something clicks, when you feel proud of the work, or when you leave a session exhilarated by the therapist you are becoming. Starting out in this work can be joyful and energizing as much as it can be daunting. Supervision can hold both.
You can bring:
- the client who keeps returning with the same concerns and leaves you wondering whether therapy is actually moving
- the session where you froze, lost your train of thought, or walked away thinking, I have no idea what I’m doing
- the client who disclosed suicidal thoughts, self-harm, abuse or another safety concern and left you wondering what you need to assess, document or do next
- the progress note you have rewritten three times because you are not sure what belongs in the clinical record
- the client who emails between sessions, arrives late, asks for letters, pushes a boundary, or leaves you unsure about where care ends and over-responsibility begins
- the client you find yourself worrying about after hours, wanting to rescue, avoiding, feeling irritated with, or thinking about more than you expected
- the cultural, religious, racial, gender, family or migration difference you want to explore without stereotyping the client or pretending difference does not matter
- the intervention you tried because you learned it in school or a training, but it did not land — and now you are wondering what the client actually needs
- the case where several different formulations seem possible and you are not sure which one to follow
- the moment when a client asks you a direct question and you are unsure whether to answer, redirect, disclose something about yourself, or stay with what is happening relationally
- the case involving trauma, dissociation, panic, psychosis, OCD, personality concerns, neurodivergence, substance use or another presentation that makes you wonder whether you are working within your competence
- the client whose story resembles your own life closely enough that you are beginning to notice it affecting the work
- the ethical question where the answer is not obvious and you need somewhere to think carefully rather than react quickly
- the client who is doing well, and the moment when you realize something you tried actually worked
- the first time you notice yourself trusting your instincts, finding your own words, or feeling genuinely proud of the therapist you are becoming
- the question you are embarrassed to ask because you think everyone else somehow already knows the answer
There is room for all of that here.
You can be honest about uncertainty. You can also bring your successes, instincts, curiosities and the parts of the work that are beginning to feel like your own.
Together, we can slow the work down. You can strengthen your ability to formulate what may actually be happening, think through risk and ethics, notice your own responses, consider different interventions, and make clinical decisions you can explain and stand behind.
You can expect honest, thoughtful feedback — including naming what you are already doing well, where I think your clinical thinking could be stronger, and what we can work through together.
I draw from narrative, psychodynamic, relational, feminist, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS) approaches. I’m interested in helping you move beyond accumulating techniques toward developing the clinical reasoning to understand a case deeply, remain curious about what you may be missing, and make thoughtful, intentional decisions in the room.
My goal is to help you become increasingly confident in how you think clinically while remaining open to uncertainty, complexity and the possibility of being changed by what your clients teach you.
Over time, you can develop a clinical voice that is thoughtful, ethically grounded, politically conscious and genuinely your own.
